The Line is still open…

At Anthony's celebration, a green telephone and chair waited in a secluded corner of Sue-meg, on the forested headland on the coast he grew up with, surrounded by ancient trees.

This stretch of the Redwood Coast, with its sea stacks, tide pools, and tall Sitka spruce, has been Yurok homeland and a seasonal fishing ground for thousands of years, and the park (formerly Patricks Point State Park) was returned to its ancient Yurok name in 2021.

Birds chirped and sang in the branches around the phone that day we celebrated Anthony . One by one, people stepped away from the gathering, sat down next to a table with fragrant flowers, a picture of Anthony, and a rotary phone in his favorite color. As loved ones lifted the receiver, they spoke to him: a few words, a memory, a story, an "I love you."
